Not able to share files with F-Secure Security Suite

Hello,

I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop all with XP. All 3 are sharing my Charter cable internet connection through a D-Link DI 524 router. I have enabled the firewall on Windows, Charters F-Secure Security Suite, and on the router itself. If I want to transfer files to one of these 3 computers, I have to disable the F-Secure firewall and I have no problem doing so. Is there a way to transfer files securely without disabling the firewall? I'd like to be able to do this from across the room without having to leave the room but more importantly not have to turn off the firewall at all.

Thank you
Klyg

if you turn off all software based firewalls on all machines(the router-based one should not be an issue) you should have no problems sharing files (assuming of course that the network is properly set up with machine names, workgroups and IP addressing)

Thre is a new secure networking VPN style system called Hamachi that you should look at. It was designed mostly for people to connect to their home networks from a hotspot safely, but will work for your needs as well. It works totally via outgoing connections so you wouldn't have to open the firewall at all. You do have to install a small client on each box, but that's not bad.

Thank you both for your quick responses. Its not a HUGE deal to have to disable the firewall in order to transfer files but it is a hassle. I figured the routers firewall would block out any incoming traffic while I were transferring between the computers but still don't like to turn off the software firewalls even if it's for a few minutes. (I might then forget to turn it back on also). I will check out Hamachi also. Thanks again.

Install NetBEUI protocol on all the computers. This will allow local filesharing to go right through the F-Secure firewall. It will not compromise your security or be visible from the Internet.
