Hi folk,
I have 2 internet connections from 2 differents ISPs - via cable modem and LAN. The problem is that the 2 ISPs don`t agree to use different connections under one OS, so for the moment I have no choice accept unplugging cables when I need the one of these connections. I have 3 network cards and my system is running under win2k3. I think to install a virtual OS on wmware workstation for example winXP and my BIG question is - is there any way to plug an internet connection to a network card and this network card to move the connection to another card, my idea is to use the 2nd internet on the virtual OS, but the first card must ONLY transfer the internet WITHOUT sharing it on my main OS. I hope I was able to be max clear though my english is bad. Thx in advance . |

What 2 LANs?
I am guessing one is a Cable, what is the other Connection? DSL?? They make routers with 2 WAN Ports. . . . They cost more, but that might solve the problem. Now if you had an OS that had the requirements for setting up routing services you could make the PC into a router. You might be able to have 2 hardware profiles for one PC and just reboot it. 2 ISP's probably are 2 different networks and if they see each other you would get conflicts. SUSE or some Linux box might be able to do this. It would still take some tinkering. I think you need a Bridge or something. XP has a software bridge. However, that does the opposite. You dont want ISP 1 seeing your network and being able to look at ISP 2. |

The 1st connection is Cable, the 2nd one is LAN ISP (in my country they are very popular becoz we have great speeds between the city users on the network). You are very correct that if the 2 ISPs see each other under 1 OS there will be very serious problems. Installing 2 Operating systems and to reboot the PC to swtich between these connections is not a good solution, coz I want to use both connections at the same time. I`ve never worked under Linux systems, and now it`s not a good time for me to study for this. I`m paying my taxes for these connections however I use just one of them
Cant u just tell me how to transfer internet from one network card to another in the way that the 1st card will stop giving net to the OS. With this method I want to transfer the 2nd ISP`s internet to my Virtual PC. |

Research continues ....
So people, I plugged the both net connections to my PC and they both work good. But the problem is that I cant divide them in the way that I want. Windows is using one of them as default connection and the second one start to work only when the 1st one is "fallen" for a while. I installed a second OS on my virtual PC and my new questions are:
How to choose which connection to be default for windows ? How to make Virtual OS choose to take internet from the LAN dat I wish, coz right now it`s using the default internet connection of my main OS. Thank you

in XP you might be able to disconnect from one of the connections while you use the other one then disconnect the other one to use the other one. I don't see why you just don't use one of the conncections and get rid of the other? I fthe other one's LAN you should be able to bridge it onto your own network instead of having to have them both run into your pc.
Edit: also for just $50 you could get this router which use's 2 internet connections instead of having all the problems that would come with having 3nic's Last edited by kodmaster; 01-11-2006 at 06:47 PM. |

Thank u very much for your attention. I found the solution of my problem and of course I`m gonna share it with you.
When u have 2 internet connections and only 1 PC; first you plug your connections to your network cards. Windows will use the connection with pref. gateway for main internet and the second connection will be something like backup i.e. it will work only when your 1st connection is down. So, in my case the 2nd connetion is needed becoz of the high local speed. Now you need to make only 2 steps. 1. You find the IP of the site that you want to be opened with your second connection, for example it is 80.94.134.56 * 2. Open CMD and write this command: route add -p 80.94.134.56 mask 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0 <---- this 0.0.0.0 must be the gateway of your 2nd internet connection ! with this command you add the IP addresses of the sites that you want to open with the 2nd connection. They pass throught its gateway. -p is neccessary to add the IP addresses permanently, so you won`t need to route again after reboot. *if you want to see the IP address of a site use the command below: tracert host, for example tracert yahoo.com |
