Router firewall settings
I have a few harware firewall questions.
First of all this might be long. Sorry. I have a Verizon DSL connection. My router is an Actiontec GT704WG. Yes I have the PDF manual. The mauual only states the options, it dosent explain them. Firewall settings: By default the firewall is set to off. Even though it's off, it still provides basic NAT firewall protection. Right now my firewall is set to off because I don't understand what these services are that it will be blocking. Here are my choices. Setting Low: SERVICES TO BE BLOCKED: NETBIOS-SSN, PROFILE, MICROSOFT-DS, MICROSOFT-GC, DNS, NETBIOS-NS, SNMP, EPMAP, NETBIOS-DEM, LADP. All of them are checked. Setting Medium: SERVICES TO BE ALLOWED: HTTP, SMTP, DNS, HTTPS, FTP, IMAP, IPSEC IRE, NNTP, POP3, IMaPv3, IPSEC ESP. All are also checked. Setting High: The high setting is the list of medium services with the check boxes grayed out and it says that they will be the only services allowed to pass through the firewall. Any advice on what setting I should use and what services should be blocked and which ones should be allowed to pass? I've search this site and the internet and have found nothing on settings like this. I also run Sygate free software firewall but I think I'd like to run with just a hardware firewall. Thanks. |

Experiment. That's about all you can do.
