Hope to help somebody...
Hi guys,
This isn't a post about a problem I want you to fix (for once ) instead about one somebody else might benefit from.I was trying to get my network working again (I removed the cards a while back when it stopped working and I had to reinstall windows etc) I installed the card in my machine again tonight but windows just stopped responding on one of those lovely blue startup splash screens. It wouldn't accept my three finger salute to restart the machine so I pressed reset. I thought all was going fine (the card was installed properly etc) until i came to check if File Sharing was working. It said "The user is not logged on" when I typed \\jim at the Run menu. I then realised that the logon box wasn't appearing for Microsoft Networks when I logged on, strange. I looked in Device Manager and the Network Card was listed with an exclamation mark. In properties it said ASD has disabled this device because windows crashed when it tryed to use it last. I went into ASD and asked to to start the network device next time it booted, same problem again. It crashed on boot. I went into BIOS (this is how I fixed it,) In PNP/PCI Config it was set to PNP OS INSTALLED : YES... I changed this and it was also set to AUTO SET IRQ SETTINGS : AUTO... I changed this also I then checked in Device Manager what the IRQ was set to (10) and set this to Legacy ISA instead of PNP (the card is not Plug and Play compatible) It worked fine from then on, after I re-enabled it in ASD. I thought I would try and recreate the problem (just to be cocky.) When I did, it offered to tell me WHY it had crashed. And guess what, ROOT/PNP was in the crash address. Hope this helps somebody in the future Jim
