Wrt54G v5 = Not as Good?
I have been having problems with my Linksys BEFW11S4. I know, I know, it's a lemon. Anyways, I'm assembling a new system in a few days and will need two systems connected to my the router. I still cannot connect my laptop via ethernet so I'm not sure if the router will be up to the task (or if the laptop hardware has gone defective).
So, I am considering purchasing a WRT54G. I don't need wireless capabilities for at least 6 months, and when I do, I suppose I'll hold off until the newer routers are released. Back to the point... I've heard HORRIBLE mentions of the 5th release of this router. A LOT of review sites and forums online are mentioning extreme bugginess with v5 of this router. I've been told to look for the v4 units if available, but if that availability does not exist, would I be taking a risk by buying the newer WRT54G units? I am aware that Linksys released a new firmware version about two weeks ago, but from what I've read, many problems still persist. I'm curious as to whether or not there is a real problem with the WRT54G v5, or if they negative hype is the result of fanatic exaggerated. Aside from the WRT54G, is there any other (relatively affordable) router that is highly recommended? Thanks!

for my home, I use an airlink101 ar410w. It's inexpensive, has plenty of options, and has provided me with exceptional service. I don't know how much range you need, and i don't know the range limit on this thing, but it works fine in my 1500 sq ft apartment.

Thx for the suggestion. I'm still really curious about the suspected WRT54G version 5 faults though.

Stuey,
I had the same problems as you with my Linksys router (dropped connection 4-5 times a day or could not connect at all) and downloaded the newest firmware and still no help. I then tried this as per Gizmo's suggestion and have not had any issues. By the way thanks Gizmo. I have the same lemon router and tried every thing. After I tried the down load on the link and I have not dropped a connection yet, nor have I had connection troubling connecting for quite some time now. Thought you might try this before you buy a new router. And sorry don't know much about the v5 faults, because I couldn't get the thing to work after down loading any of the newest firmware. -Matt |

The system is after a fresh install so there's probably something wrong with the laptop hardware. I just mentioned that issue b/c it means I can't test the connection until the system is built.
Plus, it's only a certain few sites which cause the router to drop a connection (it only started doing this) and only when I'm using Maxthon as my browser. BUT I can't find any of the v4 WRT54G routers so I think I might get the speedbooster one or a Netgear router since they're on sale locally this week. I'm gonna hunt for a few reviews. EDIT: I didn't like what I read about the Netgear routers so I'm going to give the updated WRT54G a shot. I see that Linksys updated the firmware recently so *hopefully* all will be well. The WRT54GS is still solid as far as I know.
