How good is AVG Free for Windows and how does it compare to some products that you have to pay for?

A lot of AVG users will be able to back me up when I say this. AVG Free is an equally (or better) Virus Scanning Software in terms of protection when compared to Norton or MacAfee - and in my opinion, on par with Avast. AVG is also less resource demanding than Norton and MacAfee, thus making it more popular among users. Once your go FreeWare, and realize that it is equally as good or better (and not crap just because it is free), you probably never want to purchase software again.

I've been using AVG Free Edition for about 6 years now and don't have any complaints about it. I install it on all the computers I build for others as well as my own computers. I think it does a good job of keeping my computers safe.

It's much more efficient than most of the mainstream AVs out there.

Very well put and strongly agree... I actually switched my fathers company over to AVG (payed edition) and increased speed on all the computers (especially the laptop) and it was more user friendly then what they had...

I still use AVG Free for my personal computers and any of my friends...

i like avg and avast. i found both to be 10 times better than norton. norton is a memory hog, imo. everything is running much smoother, (more noticeable on my sisters pc cuz its has less ram).

I have only used AVG among the free ones so I won't compare but I have never been perceptably infected. Every possible infection (not many because I am careful) was caught and dealt with. I can't imagine paying for a bloated security suite that they want you to shell out more for each time they change something and call it new and improved when I can use AVG, ZoneAlarm, MS Antispyware, Spybot etc and be at least as secure. My two cents.

AVG runs in the background to monitor your computer for changes that might be caused by a virus, trojan, etc. It also has an email scanner that interfaces with Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or other email client to scan your messages for virus'.

It will check for updates automatically when your computer connects to the internet(dial-up), or as soon as you boot your computer (broadband), and will notify you if the internal virus database is out of date. Some of the advanced features aren't functional in the free version, but that does not mean that the program isn't fully functional as an anti-virus program.

I have been using it in my computers for 6 years or so and I have absolutely no complaints.

Try it, you won't be disappointed! If you have Roxio Easy CD creator installed, make sure you download the update for Roxio and install it prior to installing AVG. It is available on Grisoft's website.

Is it just Norton Anti-virus or do you have Norton Internet Security? If it's just the Anti-virus program, just go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall it. You will also need to uninstall any other Symantec items you find. Once it's been uninstalled, install AVG.

I would recommend downloading the AVG installer first and save it to your desktop (don't run it yet) or 'My Documents' and then uninstall Norton. Once Norton is uninstalled, you can install AVG.

Norton was a nightmare to Completely remove...the Add\Remove applet will remove most of the files, but unfortunately Norton leaves a few orphan files behind. Go to Nortons site and they have a removal tool which you can run after un-installing...after doing both, I still found Norton files 2 years later. It was only after a format & fresh OS install, that I finally got Norton cleaned out.

BTW: AVG free is great!

All you have to do is go to add/remove programs, uninstall anything that relates to Norton (Norton Internet Security, Norton ant-virus, live reg, live update, etc).

Then double click my computer, explore c drive, program files and delete the Norton folder.

Hmm, I uninstalled via add/remove. Installed AVG. Running great so far, no threats, but usually with NAV I never got any virus attacks anyhow.

Nowadays the problem that most people have to deal with isn't viruses...it's malware that infests their computers from just going on the net. Having a good antivirus is necessary, but you also need to equip your computer with good malware blockers and scanners like SpywareBlaster, MS AntiSpyware, Ad-Aware and Spybot.

Yeah, I know. Thanks everyone for letting me know of AVG. It's a great program, uses way less resources than NAV. Also I do have the programs cricket mentioned, spybot, adaware. Thanks again, never knew of this till I came here

This is a very good product I have been using it for a few years now. I have had it catch things that others have not caught, I know Norton has not caught some things AVG has caught.

Viruses aren't an issue with Norton..it's trojans, Norton regularly fails to detect trojans.

Good luck..
