That's a proprietary HP modem, and there's more than one version. I'd find out what exact model HP computer it came out of and look on HP's site for the driver.

Well if HP's website does have a driver for a Cheetah 2 V.90 modem, I have absolutely no clue which one it is!!!

What exact model HP computer did it come out of? That's how you have to find it.

Well you can't order recovery cd-rom's from HP anymore. Hmmm, so if they're not available anywhere else then I guess it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if I'm ever gonna get this computer to run properly I'm gonna have to tell my friend to fork over $110 for the Windows XP upgrade huh?

Why not just buy a modem that's compatible? Even a good hardware modem is only 40 bucks. Mwave has a USR 2973 for that price.

Don't it figure I have a whole bunch of ISA modems lying around but no pci's! Of course those won't work! By the way I know this isn't the right section to post this but the sound also doesn't work. It's AC'97. Is there a compatible non-XP driver that'll work? Or am I toast?

You may have to also get a cheap sound card.

Bottom line - if the customer has lost the restore disks, it's their fault.

Right I understand that. I'm gonna try to talk her into buying Windows XP again(the upgrade). The XP disk should have suitable drivers for both the modem and onboard sound correct?

I just found your other thread on this machine..........
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=152012 Why don't you just do a system recovery? Did you wipe the recovery partition? |

It wouldn't boot at all. Gave me some message about "NTLDR is compressed(think that's what it was) "and wouldn't boot beyond that. Did I wipe the recovery partition? Honestly, I'm not sure. I did reformat. How do I tell? When I reformatted it listed only 1 partition(C
Is the recovery partition hidden? Who know's it might still be there.

Did you try pressing F10 repeatedly as the instructions indicate?
Recovering during startup Use the following steps to perform a recovery from the hard drive: Backup files from the My Documents folder and from other folders you may have created. Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Turn on the PC. Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears. You have to read instructions carefully when you are working with proprietary machines. You can't just go in and reformat system drives without realizing the ramifications. In this case - no restore media provided, no restore media created by the user, no drivers available, no support for other operating systems, and no restore kits available any more, the recovery partition is your ONLY means of recovery. Okay here's where I'm at. She bought the Windows XP upgrade and for the most part everythings okay except no sound!!! Boy it sure seems like there should be a suitable audio driver on the XP disc. Apparently not! According to HP's website this computer has AC'97 Down audio and the codec device is listed as: ADI1885. I've searched Realtek's website and cannot find a match(may be a driver there i just didn't find one). What now? Somewhere out there in cyberspace there has to be a compatible driver.

Hmmm,
That driver didn't work. Almost had it installed then the computer rebooted by itself and windows recovered from a serious error. Guess it didn't like that driver. Tempted to buy an el-cheapo sound card and be done with it. |

That's going to be the best way. Careful of the cheapies - some of them can be a pain to get working in XP, do a little research first. If you can find an old Soundblaster PCI 128, 512, or original Live Value, XP has native drivers. I have a 512 and Win2000 had a native driver.
