Internet Issue

My internet has been very strange ever since I reformatted my computer. Before the reformat the computer was hooked up to the internet like a normal computer. after the reformat the internet won't connect. I have a cable connection in my apartment and it says limited connectivity in the bottom corner of the screen. I did a ip config /all or whatever and it shows no DNS and just the windows assigned IP (255.255.255.55, something like that) . And this is the weird part about this. After my internet not working for around a month one day when I turned it on, it worked just fine. it worked fine for about 1 week then right in the middle of checking my email it just stopped working again, after another 3-4 weeks it just started working for a few days again. now it is not working again and I am just wondering how to fix this? I have done alot to try and fix it. I tried turning firewalls off, I know its not a virus because it worked fine before the reformat and I have reformatted more than once to see if thats teh problem along with antivirus software. I have bought a new network card and the same problem persisted. I have taken a friends computer and hooked it up to my room and the internet worked fine, so its not my ISP. I have taken my computer to another persons house to double check to see if its my computer and the internet didn't work. I have switched in and out hardware like ram and processors. The switched the cables and so far no luck.

What exactly are you connected to, straight to the cable modem or are you connected to a router that is connected to the cable modem?? Sounds like your having DHCP problems with your PC, it is having a difficult time obtaining a valid IP address. What windows version are you running??

I am connected to a router, but when I connect to the cable directly the problem is exactly the same. my roommates computer is connected to the computer fine. I tried my computer in his room and same problem. I have windows xp home edition sp2.

Assign your PC a static IP in the correct range for the router you are using and manually put in the dns servers and gateway, which can all be found in the routers setup and status page. That should get you up and going..

It sounds more like you need to update your network adapter driver.
