BellSouth FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0
Okay if you noticed my other thread about Looking for A router. Admin can delete it if they want to. I have given up on my ISP. To many problems and runarounds when trying to get help. I'm going with BellSouth DSL. And I'm going to get the best they have.
Fast Access DSL Xtreme 6.0 http://www.bellsouth.com/consumer/inetsrvcs/index.html and am I correct in saying that I can get a Static IP with the Xtreme 6.0. I want it b/c it's supposedly for gaming. which is what this whole switchover is for. BUT I don't want to buy somthing extra that doesn't do anything. And if anyone from my area (Seymour TN) has had any issues with them please tell me what they are. And if they are the best thing since sliced bread that would be good to know. THX

The Westell Modem Bellsouth gives you is all you need if you are only connecting one computer. Otherwise, any router will do the trick (I've used LinkSys and Netgear routers with Bellsouth).
On another note, I had the DSL 6.0 for about a month, but honestly there is 0 practical performance upgrade from the DSL 3.0 (cheapest which gives you a static IP). I would drop back to DSL 3.0 and save yourself the $8 per month. |

Even if the Clan server is in NY and i'm in TN?
and if I do end up sharing the connection with parents would it be better to have xtreme 6.0. I don't spend much money on anything but gas and my PC anyway, so 8$ saved would be nice but not necasary. And to ask again, Static IP comes with 6.0 free and what is a static IP btw? |

Well, you only benefit if the Clan server can supply you with 6 Mb/s, which would be extremely expensive on the server side. I'm not trying to tell you to drop the service, but I had 6.0 and there was no gain in speed because servers simply cannot upload that amount of data to you, it's too expensive at this point.
I have the regular DSL Xtreme (3 Mb/s) and it is just as fast as 6.0 and it includes the free static IP. |

The static IP means that you always will have the same IP address assigned to you when you connect to your ISP.

You have to be pretty close to the phone switch to get Xtreme - does your address qualify?

GLC is correct on that.
I used to work for Bellsouth DSL tech support, when my job ended, they only had DSL lite, DSL and DSL extreme was 3 meg by 384. At the time to get the 3 meg you had to be with in 12,000 feet of the phone switch. I can image the 6 meg down, you would really have to be closer. Also like others have said, after a point it is hard to tell you really are getting the extra speed unless you are running speed tests all day long. If you are just wanting the numbers on speed test, more power to you. As for the modem, that Westell is solid as they come. BTW, good to see someone else from TN on here, not many of us.

Okay I'm pretty sure I'm available for the Xtreme 6.0. I Clicked on the "button" went through said I was applicable for Fast access DSL wnet trhrough with 6.0 as my selected choice and it didn't say I wasn't out of area for it. I didn't want to go too far with the applying for DSL scince they have our phone # ect. I didn't know if they had payment info already and I didn't want to be billed for it yet. Do you know if at the end of the procees there is a screen asking if all the gven info is correct before they bill me? Cause I would prefer to not pay for the best DSL and be so far that it actually isn't that quick after it reaches me.
And Byte, do you know where around Knoxville, Seymour, Sevierville the Bell South building is? I'm not doing it for speed tests, I really, really, really, am addicted to CSS, I don't spend much $ anyway so i'm gonna try to get the best I can afford.
