Moving; what type of broadband to go with?

To the new place we're moving the follwing major ISPs offer these deals in the area;

Bellsouth
DSL 3Mbps down 384kbps up $37.95/mo

Adelphia
Cable 4Mbps down 386kbps up $42.95/mo

(We've been with Bellsouth for over 2 years now upgrading from 1.5 to 3.0 just recently at no charge.)

My question is about ping with the two types of broadband. I'm not familiar with cable, how does ping compare with DSL? Since for games it's not the bandwidth that's important.

Ping doesn't really depend on the type of broadband (DSL versus cable). It depends on server and router configuration more than anything. You may want to go over to http://www.dslreports.com/ and see if anybody has anything to report on the pings they get with those services.

It if a close call. Most people will never notice the difference between 3 down or 4 down.

to be 100 percent honest, there are people that have great luck with either type of service and it is really going to depend on your area.

Example. A person has a horrible bellsouth connection and they go to cable and have good luck. That person says bellsouth stinks.

Another person has bad lucky with cable and goes with bellsouth, that person says cable stinks.

both are right and wrong for the wrong reason.

Just like restate-Location, Location, Location is the key.

To get bellsouth 3meg down, You have to be with in 12,000 feet of the Central Office (CO).

To even get DSL you have to be less then 18,000 feet with bellsouth.

I no longer work tech support for Bellsouth DSL, but if you go with them, I would only take an Ethernet modem like the WESTELL, I would not want the 2wire homenetworking package.
