DSL Question

I am finally trying to get up to the latest technology of DSL. I have been using dial up for quite a while now and never really had a reason to switch.

One question I do have with this is, would I need to purchase/install another phone for DSL to work?

I purchased a new house and they included while building "Cat. 5 wiring for phone and data lines, allowing high-speed Internet and networking in all bedrooms, family rooms and kitchens."

Does this mean that I am good to go?

If so, what equipment must I buy to get connected. I am thinking about using SBC DSL because of the great deals they are having at the moment.
From what I understand they will send me a modem. I also understand that I may need to purchase an ethernet card. If so, could you recommend a good one that is not very expensive ($20-40 range)

Thanks to all who reply.

DSL piggybacks in over your existing phone line. You will have to plug filters (several supplied in the SBC kit) into the phone jacks that you use for telephones, answering machines, fax machines, caller ID boxes, etc.

Are you sure your computer doesn't have an onboard Ethernet adapter already? If you need one, the D-Link DFE-530TX+ is a good cheapie.

Do you want to network multiple computers? If so, you will need additional equipment. You can find where they terminated all your data wiring and put the modem and a router down there - then just plug the computers into the data jacks in the rooms. The optional SBC 2Wire home networking kit works quite well in lieu of the modem and a router (that you would have to buy yourself) but you would need an inexpensive Ethernet switch (the 2Wire only has one Ethernet port). The advantage of the 2Wire is SBC will support it - if you use your own router, you are on your own.

I had to put filters on all phone outlets, whether they were in use or not.
