Upgrading to broadband
greetings,i have up grade my internet connection from AOL dial up to broadband.i had both netzero and aol dialup on both laptop. It worked fine.iconneted my first com puter to the broadband modem and installed aol broadband software. The result is ,"page cannot be displayed". i then try the second computer, and i was able to go on the net. on the first computer i then remove aol and netzero, restart computer. i try to install aol broadband software.in the final stage it keep on asking for dialup selection, info.eg how to dial out etc. i try using "internet explorer" to gon on line but result is the same. it says TCP/Ip cannot reset. i feel i need to enter the ip manually. it may be easier to follow the info on second computer. help!!! |

Which model broadband modem are you using, are you connecting it USB or Ethernet, and what versions of Windows and AOL are you using?

To reset TCP/IP in windows XP follow this:
Start menu > Run > type "CMD", Press enter Once at the Command Prompt, type "netsh ip reset iplog.txt" (without quotes) ** the "iplog.txt" is the filename of the logged results of that command if you wanted to view it. Also you can change the name to something else you want. This will reset some registry settings for TCP/IP and hopefully get your Internet Explorer functional again. |

You are using cable - and this is how it works. You set up the first computer, so it's the MAC address of its Ethernet adapter that's registered as being the authorized client. You cannot connect a different computer without a MAC reset.
If you want to share the modem with 2 computers, you need a *router* - not a simple hub. You would have to connect the modem and both computers to the router, set up the router for obtain IP address automatically, then "clone" the MAC address of the first computer into the router. THEN it will work the way you want. To get the MAC address of the first computer, you open a command prompt (start - run - cmd) and type IPCONFIG/ALL - look in the listing for the Ethernet adapter for "Physical Address" - it will look like "00-00-06-E5-6A-1D". Danky - this is a lot easier to reset the Winsock - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/N...nSockFix.shtml |

thanks
after reading a little i realise the both computer will not work when both conneted to the hub at the same time.
but if i only i connect one at a time ,they should work.(it did not.) i tried reseting the modem by unpluging but still would not work. thecomputer that is working when i right click on network and go to properties i can read the ip and say assigned by DHCP on the one that does not work, say assigned by private.... and the ip is different the other computer that is working. thanks in advance |

That is because the modem will not respond to a DHCP request from an unregistered MAC address. You need a router. They are cheap.

Thanks again.
I do understand what you say but i have been told if i should plug in any one comp it should work. only if i choose to have more than one comp/laptop plug in then it will not. i do plan to get a router but i want to make sure each comp can go on before i experiment with wireless. i see others have so many problem. |

Who is AOL using in your area for their cable provider - Time-Warner?
Try turning the power to the cable modem completely off for 20 minutes. Then hook it to the second computer and start it up. If it still pulls a 169.254.x.x private IP, you do have a Winsock problem on that computer and you should run this little application: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/N...nSockFix.shtml There is still a possibility that the cable provider does not support automatic MAC resetting - if that's the case you have to call to get it reset. Have you talked to an AOL "tech" about this yet? |

The FIRST thing you need to do is connect the first computer that has been working all along to the router and clone its MAC address into the router. Then test each computer in the router wired. Then you can start playing with the wireless.
