I have used AVG for a long time, the free edition. As I was about to download it to-day, I noticed it is now quite limited in its options, since Grisoft is now trying to push its pay-for solutions. I have used also Antivir in my games install and I was wondering which one would be better. Is there any other free AV better than these two?

I dont know why but I never really liked antivir. From what ive seen AVG free is getting better but I dont use it myself on my own pc so I wouldnt really know. Its still a very good choise. If you are looking for another free AV take a look at avast!, its getting more and more polular lately.

If you need the options then AVG's pro version has always been richer than the free version and under pressure it's gotten more so.
I don't need (or want) them on my home computer but if you do then Antivir won't really be the answer either.
Time for NOD 32 if you don't want the AVG SOHO edition.

AVG is a favorite of mine, but I also like AVAST Home Free. If you find that AVG doesn't cut it for you with it's newest free-edition-limitation, try Avast.

As far as I am concerned, this is a good thing... I want to have an AV which can detect and remove the latest threats assuming I ever get a virus on my PC.

Al, I just searched Google News - I found nothing. I think he's spreading a rumor or he's thinking about one of the other companies that Symantec has swallowed up lately.

Well, we've all been over this before but....

No AV program detects EVERYTHING, so it is always good to cross check with others. On the subject of Avast, I quit using it when I cross checked with AVG and found five trojans Avast had failed to detect.

AVG has been good to me (and my customers) over the past few years. And anyone who objects to an AV program retrieving the latest updates on a regular basis is obviously not interested in their own security. The more recent updates, the better, period.

Ewido seems to be the way of the future at this point. It is the only AV I have used to cross check that has found items not detected by AVG, Panda or Trend Micro. Most all of them were located in (believe it or not) Mozilla Firefox browser cache and other Mozilla files. Most were rather lame (tracking cookies and such) but it did find a trojan that was located in system restore.

For free AV (and even pay programs) AVG is still my program of choice. I just don't have to clean machines that are running it as much as those running other programs.

GLC I spoke to my instructor last night .....after asking specific questions to him I am not so sure the whole thing has any weight

I kinda thought that would be the case. I'd also question that instructor's credibility with everything he teaches you now. Unfortunate. We dont need BS'ers passing off BS as factual information in a classroom setting.

I haven't heard anything about that either... I switched to AVG a few years ago and really like it. Sure, I can't say do the update at exactly 4AM, it gives a range... but that's ok, the fact is I can still have auto updates on a very regular basis and auto scan nightly.

Intel Capital acquires a stake in Grisoft. Anyway, Intel has been historically interested in software solutions as well.

Intel did not "buy out" Grisoft. Their venture capital fund bought a substantial amount of shares in the company, along with another equity firm. Calling this a "buyout" is vastly oversimplifying it and is not the correct term.

To stay malware free: AVG antivirus/antispyware, Malwarebytes anti malware, Commodo Pro free firewall, ccleaner, Windows updates. or.... just install Linux Too many computers in this house to list. They are all my builds, some AMD some Intel...
