Extending the range of a wireless network

Within the past year, I installed a Linksys WAP54Gv2 wireless modem/router combo at a friends house. It was installed in the office on the third floor, and has a wired system connected to it, as well as a wireless laptop in an adjacent room.

However, he has informed me that he wants a laptop on the ground floor to be able to connect wirelessly. The problem is that this room is a considerable distance from where the router is, and I very much doubt the wireless signal will reach.

Running cables is not an option, so i reckon my options are reduced to installing a wireless access point on the second floor, to pick up the signal provided by the router on the third, and boost it to the downstairs office for the laptop.

Will this Linksys access point I found be able to do this?

My only concern is that it's only designed to add wireless connectivity to an existing network, and not to receive and boost an existing wireless signal.

Answering That one, is where you guys hopefully come in

Cheers,

FK

There are wireless extenders such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124037

Don't be too certain the network won't reach, at my house i have a wireless router in the basement and signal is great in the second floor of the house. I'd make sure the laptop won't get signal in the basement before i bought anything special.

I'll certainly check the signal before purchasing anything else.

I've since found Ebuyer's range of Wireless Boosters, including the one you linked to at Newegg, Flanzig. Not cheap, (£60 GBP), so here's hoping the signal will reach.

Definitely try it first. I have a linksys router in my apartment. My neighbor connects to the internet through my router. The signal is going perhaps fifty feet and through three or four reinforced concrete walls, floors, or ceilings. The computer says it's a weak signal but it works fine.
