Unable to play media files

I noticed last month I couldn't play media files. Didn't think about it then as I mainly use the computer for gaming only. However I tried again yesterday and noticed I still couldn't play media files. Even my Star Wars DVD. Not to mention it looks like windows media player was removed from the right click menu?

Is it possible I have reminiats of the windows media exploit from last month? I did download the updates from Microsoft. Today I ran the stand alone malicious tool remover, it found 1 item but removed it. I have restarted several times since and i still can't play my DVD's or other test media file (avi, wmv, mpg) that others ppl on the net seem to access no problems with. I don't believe I had this problem in January.

Ad Aware \ Spybot S&D \ AVG free (well all were free)

I just installed a 30 day demo of Nod32. I might go in that direction for a paid AV.

I might also go pro with Ad Aware. There is no time limit on replies if any one else has any. I would "like to" view video's on my computer (I'll emphasize LIKE TO as it is not a 'need to' basis) but it is not that important to me.

However I would like to know what's going on especially if there is something wrong with my pc and if I have become comprimised somehow...

And the malicious software tools from windows as well as their updates (there is so many of them) But all from Microsoft).
