NIC not allowing IE to function

Hi

I have a Belkin router setup with DHCP and I occasionally use it to plug in a friends PC to do updates and so on.

My PC is connecting fine but when I plug in his (via ethernet cable), I get the old 'Page cannot be displayed' error.

I have checked the router and his PC is listed in the DHCP client list and the background Windows Update is working and updating but when I try to connect to the Internet with IE i get the error.

I have tried two different NICs, tried Release/Renew, uninstalled and reinstalled the NICs.
I have run WinsockFix app and all with no success.

Any suggestions would be very welcome...!

TIA

Try power cycling the cable modem and router. Unplug both. Plug the modem in first. Wait for all the lights to become solid again. Now plug in the router. Wait for it to self test and id all the pc's. Try your IE. You may need to reboot the pc(s) too.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I have turned off the modem and router and both PCs (both connect to the router via ethernet cable).

After switching everything back on as instructed (modem first etc.) I still have the same problem...any other suggestions?

How does he connect to the web when he's not on your system? If it's a dial up system, you may need to reconfigure the Connection area of IE/tools/Internet Options. Check the button to Never dial a Connection and check the LAN settings to be sure "Automatically detect settings" is checked.

Hi Panama

I have already checked that and disabled the dial-up connection...

I should add that this PC had numerous infections which have been removed (oh the joy of Limewire...) but they seem to have corrupted IE6.

I have even downloaded and installed the Beta IE7 (which I have used without problems for two weeks) and still no joy.

Next...

Try going back to IE6 and check in our Tips and Tricks area. There's a sticky thread there on "fix ie". Worth a shot.

Thanks for the tip.

It didn't work either - I uninstalled IE7 Beta and restarted then ran the IE Fix patch but nothing has changed...

Windows Update is running happily in the background (via Internet) but IE6 refuses to connect to any pages...anyone...?

I'm tearing my hair out here...|

Have you tried using an alternative browser like Opera/Firefox ? If those work, it's definitely an IE issue and you may be better of trying a repair install (which will keep your programs but replace the system files).
