Strange Error - Any ideas?

I am periodically receiving this error:

4/12/2006 1:37 PM Dhcp Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address on the Network Card with network address 001109EBF729.

&

4/12/2006 1:48 PM Dhcp The IP address lease for the Network Card with network address 001109EBF729 has been denied by the DHCP server (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Any ideas?

Where did you find this error ? Does it come up in a dialog window, or was it in the System log ?

need a little bit more info:

1) what is your DHCP server? router (make and model please)? something else (specifics as well)
2) PC, O/S, NIC wired or wireless?
3) has the network been chanted recently or is this an "out of the box" issue?

1. I do not have a router at the moment. I have 2 comps in the house - only one is hooked up to the cable modem because I'm lazy. I have a wireless router waiting to be installed, still. Just moved recently - haven't got around to it yet. I only recently had the cable company (Mediacom) get around to bringing over the cable modem/etc.

2. PC: Custom
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ w/ venice core CPU, ASUS k8n Neo NForce4 939 slot mobo, Nvidia GEForce 6600GT 128mb, Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS soundcard, Xclio 450w psu, etc. Windows XP Pro w/ service pack 2. Wired.

3. No?

I take it that you do lose the network connection or are unable to use the network when this happens ? If you don't notice anything besides the error n the system logs, you might just ignore it.

if you are a straight connection to the modem, then you are picking up your IP address from your ISP's DHCP server (it assigns IP addresses). These IP addresses can be set to be valid for X amount of time (the lease period) and then when that time is up, the lease expires and a new IP address is set. from the error code, it sounds like the lease has expired and the request to have a new IP address has been denied.

Couple of possible reasons for that:

1) a change in MAC address, the ISP may assign IP based up a MAC address and if that address changes then you are an invalid user and no IP for you.

2) they could be having some DHCP issues.

one thing I just noticed: you have 2 machines. Are you trying to connect both machines simultaneously to the 'net without a router? without a router, you (more than likely) have 1 IP address for 2 computers and that won't work and that would account for the error code you are getting

Sounds reasonable. No, no. I have only one machine hooked up to the cable modem. I do have a router - but it isn't hooked up. So, I haven't hooked up the other comp yet, either. y router's power cable went missing in transit - and I'm such a procrastinator that I haven't went for another one yet. In the meanwhile, I was noticing this error in the system log and was curious about it.
