Wire question

I gave a LinksysWRT54G router in my house. I am going to run a cable from that router to my workshop. What do I need in my workshop to connect two PC's?
I am assuming a switch will suffice?

Yes, a switch will work, or a hub. A switch is better.

Thank you! One more question. I have an extra LinksysWRT54G router, would that also work?

Yes, that would probably work; however, you would want to disable DHCP on it, and plug the wire from the main router into one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port. You may or may not need a crossover cable; I'm not exactly sure.

OK ......... Thanks for the reply. I'll give the router a try and see how it goes.

A cable would be fine for one PC but I need to connect two PC's in the shop.

I'm pretty sure he was correcting me by saying that a patch cable, not a crossover cable, will work.

A standard patch cable will work as long as you use the uplink port on *one* of the devices.

Not only do you have to disable DHCP on the router you need to modify to a switch, but you have to change its internal IP to an address other than the default, in the subnet of the main router, and out of the main router's DHCP scope. I'd suggest 192.168.1.200.

Thanks for all the replies. I bought a Linksys 5 port hub and all is well. Both PC's are connected and working well.
