comp not connecting to internet

My friend's comp isn't connecting to the internet. a few days ago after he dl some files (and scanned them with antivirus) he turned off the comp, it was fine, two days later the internet wont connect.

he updated the drivers. did last known good configuration, turned off the modem and turned it back on.

so turned off both comp and modem, then turend on the modem and started the comp, and turend off the modem while the comp is runnin. has done repair on the comp side but it doesnt seem to do anything.

im clueless on what's going on. could he have gone over his monthly bandwith?

wire is fine connecting the modem to the comp, and the modem works too. we have no way of test the comp but two days ago it worked fine and he didnt touch it for two days(it was turned off).

what could be wrong?

and what can i do to fix it? updated the drivers... what else can i do?

What *kind* of modem and Internet service? Any router in the equation or is it a direct connection?

comcast broadband cable, the modem is a motorola, no router, and the comp side its built in, intergrated nvidia something. so the chipset updated it.

hmm would uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling do anything?
