Limitations to HomePlug/net over ring main?

I am considering networking over the electric ring main.
To get the network to a building 40m from WLAN hub. It's too far for the WiFi to work.
The outbuilding is on its own circuit, on a separate "consumer unit" from the one the plugs which the PC net hub is on, but it is still part of the same domestic mains circuits. Will the HomePlug, DLAN, net over ring main work, or do the plugnets need to be on the same breaker circuit on the main?

I believe it *should* work as long as both circuits are on the same breaker *box*. You could also use phoneline networking if you have the same phone line in both buildings.

Especially for Homeplug devices it would be handy if you could try them out first, since the whole concept has a lot of pitfalls. I tried a pair, and they worked with good link quality over the entire house. However, when I used them my ADSL router began warm resetting about every hour, and it did this only when I was using the Homeplugs. Changing the power socket used didn't help one bit. I'm now trying to find someone local to sell them to, but my first two attempts (two friends) gave a very poor link quality result so no go.

The two locations are on separate breaker boxes, but the same mains supply.

My house has a 200 amp panel in the addition to the house and the original 100 amp service operates as a subpanel of that. I have two netgear homeplugs, one connected to the router and the other plugged in to an outlet on the subpanel and it works fine there. When I connect it to an outlet on the new 200 amp panel it does not connect to the router. Works fine elsewhere in the house.
