DSL Modem trouble...
Ive just recently built a new pc(first timer) and Ive been trying to get my external modem hooked up to it. For some odd reason I cant get my new pc to reconize it. I know it works, Im using it right now with my old pc. I dont know much about the modem, all I know is its a Paradyne external modem with USB/eithernet hookups and a built in filter. I have a 256k DSL internet connection from a crappy local ISP.
I hooked the modem up exactly like it was with my old pc, through eithernet and so on, and nothing. I ran the Add Hardware Wizard, and a network driver "Nivida Network Controller" was installed. After a bunch on fooling around in device manager, and Installing-Uninstalling, I cannot get my modem to work. Network connections in control panel says that "A Network Cable is Unplugged". The lan light on the front of the modem is not on, just like its not even hooked up to the computer. Ive also tryed to hook it up through USB, but windows says the hardware cannot be installed, incompatible driver I suppose. Ive searched for new drivers, and no luck. All drivers on my computer have been updated. Looks to me like I might need to get a new modem. On my new pc, Ive got Windows Xp x64 professional. Could this modem just not be compatible with 64bit computing? I asked my ISP about it and they said that it should be compatible with windows x64. They dont know why its not working either. Im stumped, but then again Im just a newbie to this. Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help... In case if anyone needs to know, Ive got a Biostar N4SLI-A9 nivida 4 motherboard that Im trying to use. Thanks... |

Using with USB would require a modem driver. Using it with Ethernet only requires a properly installed driver for the Ethernet adapter, 64 bit computing has nothing to do with this except for Ethernet adapter drivers. The onboard Nvidia ethernet adapter has quite a history of issues, possibly related to the Nvidia firewall. Bottom line, you need to have a properly working Ethernet adapter with the correct drivers.

Thanks for the info very much!!! First off, I dont have the Nivida firewall installed. Secondly, ive installed the newest driver for the network plug. What else can I do besides buy another modem, or another Mobo? If there is nothing to do but buy another modem, what should I buy that would be compatible with this network plug?
Once again, thanks a bunch for the help... |

Do you see any problem indicators in the Device Manager? Specifically for Network Adapters, is yours showing that it's ok or does it show a yellow ! by it? I assume by "network plug" you're referring to the Network adapter which is where the ethernet cable plugs in.

Device Manager show not a problem. It states everything is working correctly and device is enabled. I suppose this modem is not compatible with the Nividia nework adapter?
Oh yeah, yes I was meaning "Network Adapter" when I said Network plug. Thanks again... |

Ethernet is Ethernet. It's possible the onboard adapter is defective - you can uninstall the drivers, disable it in the bios, and install a cheap PCI Ethernet card, just make sure it's x64 compatible..
