AVG not stopping viruses

Hi,

I just done a scan on my system using AVG free and it detected 695 viruses which most of them were backdoor trojans

YES!695.

How did so many viruses get past AVG Antivirus?

I mean isnt AVG sopposta be one of the best free antiviruses you can get?
AVG did clear em all up though(I think ).
I do regualrly update AVG too so that isnt the problem

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Yes, for a free AV, it is one of the best, but I have yet to read a comparison review where free AVs are not on or near the bottom of the review when compared to most paid for AV programs.

The few times I've mentioned that, I've gotten hammered over it, but it is Not a slam on AVG, as it's the "free" one I'd pick too. And, before I get slammed again, I'd still like to see a review from a reputable "place" (like PC World, etc.) that puts AVG on the top when compared to paid for programs (yes, I know it's on the top when compared to other free ones).

Jars, I get the impression you have some training in spyware removal. Your expertise is welcome here but please observe our procedures for suggesting the posting of a HJT log. Thank you.

They not only got past AVG they got past your firewall/router with equal ease.
As for getting past AVG, if they had you wouldn't have found them when you scanned. In fact it's likely you wouldn't have been able to scan at all .
We need some history from you.
How do you manage your computer's security?
If you got hit with a sudden massive invasion of spyware there's something else that happened.

If AVG can find them now then they must have invaded your system before AVG knew about them, which begs the question of how often do you update?
What have you done recently or where have you surfed the net that could have caused this infection?
How is your update scanner set in AVG, Auto or Manual?

You need to seriously examine your browsing habits. I think I have a pretty good idea where all those trojans came from, but I'm not going to accuse you of anything specific in an open forum. Let's just say if you want to play, you will pay, there's no such thing as a free lunch. I don't really know of any security package that's 100% effective against that kind of stuff - where you HAVE to accept an ActiveX object in order to get what you want. Use an alternative browser that doesn't understand ActiveX.

At this point, I'd advise you get a free (yes, free and legitimate) online scan at www.ewido.net.

I do lots talking via MSN too & playinglots of online multiplayer gaming on a game called Wolfestien-Enemy terretory.
If you mean Porno sites then i am guilty Well i mean who dont go on em?

Do you think its time for me to get a better security package?

Like glc says you need another browser but the fact is, if the site requires access and you give permission, there is no anti-virus or firewall out there that's going to save you.

No, but how often do you update your security programs and how often do you do full system scans with all the security software you have installed on your computer?

Most security programs will allow brand new malware on your computer because they don't know what to look for until you update them with the latest signatures. After you update the signatures the programs will know what to look for but you may have to do a full manual scan of the system in order to find them. Active background scanners will only pick up malware if they are doing something...if the file is just sitting on your hard drive doing nothing background scanners may not notice them. Doing a full system scan with the latest signatures on a regular basis will help to keep your system clean.

And security software comes in two types...scanners and blockers. Most security programs are scanners, some are just blockers and a few will do both. But as been said, one program won't stop or detect everything. Having a decent anti-malware arsenal is a necessity nowadays. I read an article sometime last year where the author decided to see how long it took before an unprotected computer got truly messed up while surfing the web. It took less than half an hour before his computer was so bogged down with malware it was all but useless. Of course he surfed to known "hot spots" to purposely get infected...if he surfed safer sites his computer wouldn't have gotten infected as quickly, but it still would have gotten infected eventually.
