Exclamation internet connection network problem

i share my cable connection with my bro using a hub. Whenever my bro. is downloading something or using the internet connection quite heavily, i would completely loses internet connection on my computer. At that time, I can't even surf the net, and impossible to stay in queue for mirc. After a min. or so, i would get my connection back. This happens quite often and it gets really frustrating. This problem happens only on my computer, but not my bro's. Is there a way to fix it ?? thank you very much.

You can't run more than one machine on the net at a time through a hub, you need a router that will assign each of your machines it's own IP address and use the common one from you ISP to as it's own IP.

smoke, I have to disagree with you

At one time I had(before I bought a router)a cable modem feeding into a small hub. And connected to that hub where three different PC's. All with different static IP addresses. There were no sort of problems with any of the PC's experiencing a loss of internet connectivity. All dl'ing napster at one time, all fraggin on counterstrike at one time, etc.

As for the original post, I would first suggest verifying all network settings in both computers, and make the settings match between the computers, except for IP address, computer name, etc. Items that are unigue to the computer should not be changed. If they both match..it's hard to say. I would refer to one of the more network experienced guys here in the forum for reasons this would happen. Trying another NIC couldn't hurt either.

Good luck

Hey Surfmaster,
Did you by chance have multiple accounts with your ISP or have one of your machines setup as a server/router for your network with three net cards? It will work with either of those setups but mine won't do it just connecting two or three machines through a hub either. The last to go online will bump the other one off. There is an article here telling how to use a Linux box as a server/router for internet sharing. Most ISP's will give you an additional IP account for $5 to $10 a month more. I always have two machines on my router at all times and usually have three because I am working on the third one.

It is still better to buy a router than getting two Addresses, Notonly will the router pay for itself, the connection quality when running two machines is better, and you have a physical firewall.
