Manual restoration of regedit, taskmgr, etc.? How?
Is it possible for us to restore standard windows functions like regedit, taskmanager, search, run, or else, manually by ourselves? Anyway, recently I got an attack by W32borax.A, it disables all I mentioned above.
It hides search, and run tabs, and disables them. I tried installing and running NOD32, it detected and deleted all the virus' files. I combined it with HijackThis, sweeping all suspicious lists, like disable regedit etc. My comp's now cleared, the task manager and regedit is working, but the search and run tabs in start menu is still hidden. And although there is another search tab in my windows explorer, it is not functioning. And I noticed that ALL my application files shown as "File Folder", like the previous virus' files. How to turn it back to "Application"? Return to the main question, is it possible to manually restore them. If it isn't, what program can we use to hijack them? Thx alot! |

If your registry has been damaged, which appears to be the case, then your best bet would be a repair re-install of XP providing you have the XP cd and not a restore cd.
It wouldn't hurt your data but you'd have to redo all the updates and all the drivers afterwards. If a restore cd is all you have then save what data you can and just bite the bullet and reformat.

Alternatively, if you feel like getting down and dirty with your registry:
