Losing DNS

This keeps happening to me these days.

First time it was last week, I'm using my laptop (Windows XP Home edition) over my home wireless network, and all of a sudden, I can't can't access any website, error: can't resolve DNS.
So I restored windows using the Restore Utility, it worked fine afterwards for 1 day. Then it happened again, this time the restore utility couldn't fix the problem, even when restoring to much older restore points. I had to reinstall windows on top of the existing setup. This fixed the problem. Two days later (today), it happened again. Restore couldn't fix it.

The "ipconfig /all" shows my DNS server is 192.168.0.1, which can't be true as this is my wireless router address. I never tried to check my dns while the internet was accessible.

My setup includes another computer which is a desktop runnning XP home edition as well. This computer has been running smoothly all the time, it is connected to the network over a LAN cable. The DNS setup is preconfigured to a couple of DNS servers, probably I set that up when i first got my broadband.

The problem is why was my laptop running and now it isn't. I don't want to configure my dns servers on my laptop because I use it over several networks, and I don't want to keep reconfiguring it everytime I go somewhere.

That's the correct DNS server - the router acts as a DNS transfer as part of the DHCP process. However, hardcoding the DNS in the NIC settings is more reliable.

What happens if you hardwire the laptop to the router instead of using the wireless?

same thing, couldn't resolve the DNS. I have never set any DNS settings on my laptop before, nor on the wireless or the wired settings, and both used to work.

Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Reboot.
