I have two home networks. One is located in my house and the other network is at my job. They both have three computer's, one cable modem the other is dsl, both have linksys's routers. Is there anyway I can connect these two networks together. so I can get into the files of my home network when iam at my job and vice versa?

The right way to do this is to VPN, but that is much more complicated and potentially much more expensive.
A web server won't allow you to share files. An FTP server will, but that is cumbersome and can be pretty low security. |

I dont seem to be having much luck with this thread. How do i set up an ftp server? I have a website in my other machine on my home network. I have installed IIS service to create a web site server and I have my web site working but I can only view it from another computer in my home network by typing: http:///http://192.169.14.102/ which is the other ip address for my web site and i can view it. but i can get to my web server from the network at my job.could my router be blocking it?

Yes, your router is blocking it. 192.XXX.XXX.XXX is a private IP address; you can not access it from the public Internet. If you want to access your home web server from outside of your home, you will need to forward traffic on port 80 from your router to your web server. However, your ISP may forbid you from running any servers, especially if you have residential service. Setting up an FTP server pretty much entails installing FTP server software and running it. I think that IIS has an FTP server, but I don't use IIS so I am not sure.
Perhaps the problem you are having on this thread is not being specific enough. "File sharing", which you were asking about in the beginning, is quite a different beast than accessing a home web server from work. If you explain exactly what you want to do, we will be able to help you better. |
