Firmwares can also come in an archive (like a zip file) .. this contains a .BIN file that must be upgraded through the web interface of your router. The zip file also contains a readme.txt with directions.

It's not supposed to be an exe file (I don't think so anyway). It's not something you execute on your local machine (it might be a self-extractor that unzips a .bin file onto your hard drive though). You have to go into the router config page and load the firmware file (.bin).

Any reason why you are loading firmware? Is there an issue a newer fixes that you are having?

And be *abesolutely* sure you have the right firmware for your router before you load it.

It's keeps dropping connection about once a week. Every time it does I hook my router from SBC back up and it works So something is wrong here I had the same problem with the Roadrunner router.

blue: some Linksys products come with executables that can update f/w without the use of a browser.

Depends on the model - some Linksys routers upgrade through the interface with a .bin file, others you have to download a separate .exe updater.

If there's a built in updater, it's usually a subcategory under administration. Read your manual!
