Splitting All Over

Well, I have one line coming into the house. It splits between about 4 tv's.. Within one of those is the tv that splits into the router.. says im getting 100mbps on this computer.. Now i need to run a line probaly 50-75 feet long to my bedroom.. so this cable should be getting 100 mbps since it is right out of the router?(so far there is no splits in ethernet, just cable and ethernet coming from the router.. ) Also after it is in my room, i need to split the ethernet, one cable for computer, one for my xbox360.. so how will that affect the speed of my computer and the xbox..? any affect on the other things coming from the router? I really don't want to continue with wireless cause its slow and disconnects too much..

im using comcast basic high speed, deptford nj 08096 in case it matters..

thanks in advance,
-noob

You would do well to change your configuration. Right where it enters the house is where the first splitter should go. One line then goes directly to the cable modem and the other to the TV's. Split the tv side any way you desire but don't split the modem side. Your Cat5e runs can be as much as 300 feet without a problem.

Crimpers, wire and connectors are available at Home Depot as are splitters. Ideal Crimpers run about $40 last time I looked.

i already have regular wire crimpers so i just need the wire and connectors, and my last question is:

should i run a wire from the router and install a ethernt jack in the wall, run it trhough the house into another jack, and from that jack to my computer?
i think a wire just sticking out of the wall will look kinda funny :P
thanks,

The right way to do it is with wall jacks. Then you don't need crimpers, just a punchdown tool. You then connect to the wall jacks with standard patch cords. You cannot daisy chain your runs, each one must be separate.

The push down tool often comes with the wall connectors. It's a small blade device that pushes the individual wires into the proper slots in the connector. You need a special crimping tool for the RJ45 male ends. You can buy a cheapy plastic one if you don't plan to use it again. But if you want a good one that will last, check out the Ideal brand at Home Depot.

You need 2 runs - one for the computer and one for the Xbox - unless you want to buy a switch and put it into your room. Then you only need one run. You need CAT5e cable, you can buy it bulk at Home Depot, along with the wall jacks. I recommend you buy premade patch cords instead of trying to make those. You can also buy premade 100 foot patch cords if you don't care about having wall jacks, they are cheap at Newegg.

Just go over there and look - and the manager of that department will know exactly what you need - give them some credit.

http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=misc%2fsearchResults.jsp&BV_SessionID=@@@@0644576752.1151070415@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccckaddiedifmkjcgelceffdfgidgjk.0&MID=9876

Look for this product and either right above or below it should be 6' - 100' patch cables. Sorry as a link it was bringing up the HD home page only. I put it back to straight text, but the product name is:

Coleman Cable 1000 Ft. Category 5E, 24/4 Pair Telephone Wire Model 96263-16-06

At my Home Depot, figure I buy enough I probably own part of the store, it is on the last row parallel to the front wall before the lighting section. Its near the cordless phones, RJ-11 wire, and even a few wireless network routers....

Hope this helps.
