Networking laptop-router-pc problem

I have created a network group in xp-mshome. In my laptop, under the my network places>entire network>laptop name. When I do the same thing for my pc, nothing shows up. When I searched for the computer nothing shows up either. I have enable the files and hd for file sharing on both pc's but I cannot connect, either thru the laptop to pc, or vice versa.
Not sure if my router is at fault. Using WPN824 ver1.

What O/S are they both running?

[On Laptop] > Control Panel > Network Setup Wizard > This comp connects through a residental gateway > Make sure the workgroup name is the same for both machines (eg, MSHOME) > Turn on Printer and Filesharing

Do the same for the PC ...

Also a note there are two types of file sharing in WinXP, PRO and Simple these have to be the same on both computers or they wont work if your not doing anything complex I would use SIMPLE. Folder Options > View > Scroll down to the bottom checkbox and check the "use simple filesharing (recommended)"

And on both computers (laptop & PC) share the C:/ drive reboot 'em both (if asked) and goto 'My Network Places' and then see if both computers can see each other.

Make sure file and print sharing is enabled in the XP firewall exception list, if you are using a 3rd party firewall get rid of it.

both winxp. One pro, one home (laptop)
Both are the same MSHOME group.
I enable file and print sharing and except firewall list. Using 3rd party firewall, but even though with 3rd party firewall still on, I should at least see the connecting pc right? Its not like I don't see nothing at all. Like in the desktop. I see the same laptop name in the laptop setting, but not the desktop.

I manage to connect the desktop and laptop, but the funny thing is that I've connected the laptop to the router via cable, but I notice that I'm transfering data thru wireless connection. I could not setup the connection via RJ45. The pc does work on RJ45

When you are using a cable you should turn off the wireless radio. You need to check the firewall exception list for BOTH adapters.
