Using my Netgear wireless router with my DSL MODEM
Hello,
I've been toying around with this for quite a while and everytime I try something, I hit a brick wall. I am trying to connect to the internet through my wireless router (Netgear MR814) and a ADSL MODEM (EfficientNetworks SpeedStrem 5100). My computer will find the internet if I connect it straight from the MODEM to the computer. When I place my wireless router in between, I am having trouble finding the internet. The config page for both my wireless router and the MODEM is 192.168.0.1, which I thought might be a conflict. I have not yet successfully changed the address yet, running into problems there as well. My ISP is SBC Global, which requires login through the MODEM. Currently, my router is set to automatically be assigned a DNS/IP from the ISP. Let me know if more info is needed. Thanks in advanced for any help. kram

I think you are exactly right, your modem is a router and is conflicting with the Nergear router. Connect direct to the modem and go into the config., and you should find something like enable bridge mode and that is what you want to do so the modem will no longer function as a routr. Then you can set up config in your Netgear box as need to connect and share that connection.

Try changing the IP range on the Netgear from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x.

I've never had a problem with that -- and I'm not sure whether his ISP will work properly with the Netgear doing the PPPoE, but if it doesn't then bridge mode won't work.

Put the 5100 in the bridge mode and set the Netgear to PPPoE. This works fine with SBC.

I placed the 5100 in bridged mode and Netgear Router to PPPoE mode. I seem to have trouble configuring the router though - I inserted the login (username, password) and the DNS that the MODEM had, but I do not get anything from the internet. Any suggestions on what I could do from here?
Thanks. kram |

What do you show on connection status for the wan port on the Netgear router? What do you show if you type ipconfig from command prompt on the PC? Are you configured on the Netgear for PPPOE?? Because I know that I do not have to manually put DNS servers in my router, all I do is set for pppoe and put user name and password. Are you wanting to use dhcp or set static on your PC. If your wanting to use dhcp be sure it is enabled on the Netgear box. Obviously if you are reaching the router config then you must be OK as far as ipconfig goes at least as far as ip adress, and subnet mask are concerned, but your problem is probably those dns server entries. Let the router obtain those automatically. check your internet options, connections tab, lan settings, there should be nothing checked. Try pinging 209.68.45.231 from command line.. If successful then try that IP address in the nav bar of your browser. If that works then it is for sure those dns server entries you put in there. BTW>thats pcmechs ip address..

Thanks. I messed around with the router config settings, and it ended up that you were right. The DNS Address should have been set to get automatically from ISP. After a few ping attempts and attempts at opening the IE window, I was finally able to get ethernet cable-connected internet from the router setting the MODEM to bridged mode.
The problem I want to address now is the wireless issue. While the corded desktop does get connection, none of the laptops are receiving wireless signal. I do (temporarily) have SSID broadcast turned on, and (temporarily) disabled any WEP/WPA encryption - defaults from a recent router hard-reset. I have set the Region (USA) and the channel. I would think any PC should be able to pick up on the signal, but unfortunately, nothing is. Any suggestions here? Thanks a lot for the help. kram |

Update:
I tried two different laptops and one of them picked up the signal from the wireless router. Anything beyond a four feet radius of the router antena could not pick up the signal. However, I was able to pick up internet two feet away. I checked the "Attatched devices" in the router config page to make sure I was on the right router. As a result, I will be picking up a new wireless router. I plan to pick up the Linksys WRT54GL 802.11G wireless router (the Newegg link is currently down). I've been told that the newer versions of the WRT54G is considerably weak and crippled. Thoughts? Suggestions? The house is fairly old with, what I see to be, somewhat thick walls. Is MIMO (on 802.11g) something to keep in mind? Thanks. kram |

MIMO will give you extended range, but it's pretty pricey. Sounds like your Netgear radio has bit the dust or the antenna connection is broken internally.

Another Update:
After figuring out the wireless part of the router was shot, I ordered a Linksys WRT54GL from Newegg. I'm hoping that it'll be able to cover the entire house with 802.11g. Thanks to all who helped out - ktkendall, g, TFH. The assistance was much appreciated. kram |
