Network printer
I am trying to set up a network printer to share on my computers. I have the printer physically connected to my XP machine. I am trying to set up my win 98 PC to share it. On win 98 PC, I select add printer, select network printer and select next, the I browse for the printer on the network and I select as my path \\computer name whichis connected to PC\printer and I select next, the wizard asks me to find the manufacturer and model of my printer. I find HP but not the model so I select have disk. I tried putting my driver CD in but wizard wouldn't accept it so I select browse which opens a window and lists my win98 c: drive contents. There is an option to select NETWORK which I do. Now the wizard is asking me to map a network drive so I enter \\jersey\c for drives and it lists the contents of my C drive of jersey, I select program files and select OK but nothing happens.
What do I need to do to get my printer working on both printers please? I appreciate any help. TIA |

On the machine that the Printer is actually connected to, did you enable file and printer sharing then actually give sharing permission to that particular printer?

Ok--back up a step...
You have a network drive mapped from your win98 machine to the XP machine right? You have also selected "share this printer" in the printer properties on the XP machine? You might need to do oee or all of these things: 1) Set the printer to be shared from the Control Panel>Printers & Faxes 2) Map a network drive from win98 to the XP machine (If you can't do that, run the network setup wizard again, and be sure to enable file and print sharing--and make the network disk and run it in the win98 comp.) Try that and see what happens |

You do not need to map a network drive to share a printer. Turn off the XP firewall, than search for the printer in the 98 machine and it should find it, than just right click it to and install it it on the w98 box. You may want to make sure the workgoup is tha same on both machines and that they each have a unique name.

I assume if a manufacturers site says no network support then the printer can not be used on shared network, correct?

No that just means that there is no way to set it up as a direct access "network" printer. If it can be set up on a pc it can be shared with other pc's. You can use a print server like this one
