Serious internet issue, Browsing lags.

The internet connection itself, is fine.

But on my brothers pc (Just his, possible malware?)

The internet is active, and few programs, such as msn still works.



But when it comes to Web browsing, it takes at least 2 minutes to load a page, or the page timesout. Programs such as limewire, cannot connect. Steam cannont connect to Master game server.

If required ill post a hijack this log.

Any ideas?

and reduce the amount of startup programs, so its not bandwidth issue.

Read the sticky thread about HijackThis logs in the Security forum thoroughly and do what it suggests before you post a log. There's a lot of scanning that needs to be done.

So far, I have scanned
Ad-aware, found 16 entries including 1 malware
Spybot, found 11 entres
Norton, completed with no problems found.

The issue is, why is my brother's pc web browsing so slow.
I have tried fixing settings, Lowering IE Cache, emptying cookies, and
removing the amount of startup programs.

The only programs that start when windows does are:
(The icons that appear in the system tray
Internet Connection
Norton
Norton Live update
Video Card - Omega Driver (it shows an icon)
Volume
Daemon Tools.


edit: I haven't tried removing any files in the Hijack this log because I have never done it before.
Also, the scan was fresh after reboot, the list isn't very long.

Okay according to Hijack this log analysis, there is nothing wrong with my files.


So what the hell is going on then? Why is my brothers web browsers so slow?

Just found out that msn doesn't actually work. He can connect, but he cannot message anyone and no one see's him online.

Ive tried resetting Winsock
Resetting TCP/IP (With a fixer)
and upgrading my router firmware.

Next thing I'm going to try is resetting TCP/IP with a windows cd

How about reinstalling the network adapter driver - or try a PCI card? Have you tried disabling all firewalls?

Well, maybe according to the hijackthis analysis everything is OK, but a computer with that many browser helpers on it would immediately be suspect to me.

When I run a hijackthis log on my computer there are about 12 entries. You have tons of stuff running on that system. This first thing I would do is go to add/remove programs and unload any unused programs and toolbars. Then download ccleaner and remove all the crap that is leftover from multiple installs and un-installs. Don't forget to use the "issues" tool in ccleaner to remove invalid or leftover registry entries.

You didn't ask, but (in my humble opinion), removing Norton products and installing AVG would help also.

internet connection speed can degenerate if the users PC is not up to par as well, I would run antivirus scans as well as spyware and malware. Then i would defrag harddrive, clean out internet tempfiles and get rid of junk files, clear your history etc. all the basic house cleaning procedures, then i would run msconfig and disable anyoprogram not needed on startup, there maybe some unessasary programs being ran consuming bandwidth. what kind of connection do you have?
