Hey everyone.
I have Verizon Internet and my Westell Modem is set to bridge mode. I have a linksys WRT54G version 6 router hooked up to it. It is hardwired to my desktop (Windows XP) and is connected wirelessly to my X Box 360. Now when I first setup the router, it couldnt get all the way through the installation because it could not find an internet connection. This was strange because when I plugged the modem into the computer directly the connection was fine. Verizon couldnt help me, and I got referred to Linksys (which sucked) After talking to someone for a couple of hours we finally got it to work. But now, about once a day, the thing just disconnects. And to reconnect it, I have to power cycle the modem and the router and then go into the router admin page by typing in the IP address, going to status, and hitting connect, hoping that it connects to an IP address beginning with a 7. Now I just chatted online with a linksys guy.. he had me upgrade to the latest firmware. What did that do? Disconnected me all over again and I ha\d to power cycle etc. This is very annoying... PLEASE HELP!! |

The new versions of the WRT54G (5 and 6) are having problems. Try going back to an older firmware.

How do I go back to an older firmware? I dont know where to find that? And what specific one would be the best?

I don't know if this will help but I had to downgrade my firmware on my Linksys BEFW11S4 because of problems and all there firmware seems to be stored here newer and older
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/ You'll just have to find out the file name of the firmware but I'm sure it's there |

Try this. Update the firmware *again* - yes, same version is fine. Power the router off for 15 minutes. Power it back up again by doing this - hold the reset button in, plug in the power while continuing to hold in the reset, hold for 20 seconds. This will reset it to factory default. Log in and reconfigure it. Then power it off again for 5 minutes, power it back up. I got a grouchy v5 going again this way.
If this doesn't work, call Linksys back with your trouble ticket number and request a RMA or return it to place of purchase for an exchange if you are still within that time frame. If you possibly can, exchange it for a WRT54GL - that's a better router. It's essentially a relabeled older version of the WRT54G before they changed chips and internal OS and it works good. |

Yes, version 4 and higher are nothing but trouble. The older ones (but good ones) have nothing wrong. There was a big article on CNET or something that Linksys is pushing these for some reason.
I have a 2.0 and it is beautiful

I flashed a WRT54G version 2 with the latest official firmware last week and it now identifies itself as a WRT54GL.
