Sometimes my router just doesn't reconnect.

I've noticed that sometimes when my router is disconnected from the internet, even though I have the kepealive 20 seconds, it still doesn't reconnect. I have to manually go in to my settings and have it reconnect. I have a Linksys Wireless-G WRT5G router and sometimes it just disconnects. I had the cables replaced, the jack replaced (which reduced the disconnects) and when it does disconnect sometims it doesn't reconnect. I tried updating the firmwire (I have 1.0) and it didn't work.

What exact router version do you have? It's in very tiny print on the label on the bottom. What exact model is your broadband modem? I assume you have PPPoE type DSL?

Yeah, I'll check when I get home but I beleive it's WRT54G v1.0. The modem came with the service like 5 or 6 years ago, an alcatel. Maybe we need to order a new one?

Its possible the old modem has seen better days. If the router is a 1.0, you are way overdue for a firmware update - it's now on 4.30.5. After this update, the router will reidentify itself as a WRT54GL - L meaning Linux. This is a GOOD router. After updating the firmware, you should reset the router back to factory defaults, reconfigure it, and power it off for about 15 minutes.

I tried doing the update two ways, one through the exe that's supposed to do it automatically, and the other which is downloading the .bin file and going in my router settings to update it from there, both of which failed.

Then you are trying to install the firmware for the wrong version router or the router has seen better days.

I found what was up. I was looking at the router firmwire version on the config page and matching that up with the version number on the site. My router is version 5, the firmwire is version 1.00.6.

Edit: Upgraded the firmwire to 1.00.9 (the only update since 1.00.6)

It's not showing up as the WRT54G-L or whatever.

updates being

Quote:
Firmware 1.00.9
- Resolves issue with MAC cloning
- Resolves issue with L2TP connection
- Resolves issue with using DNS server behind the router
- Resolves issue with loading configuration through HTTPS
- Resolves issue with PPPoE CHAP authentication
- Resolves issue with using Ping Plotter
- Resolves issue with SSH disconnects
- Resolves issue with DHCP WAN connection not acquiring the correct IP
- Resolves issue with UPnP
- Adds support for WRT54G v.6
- Resolves issue with Access Restriction
- Resolves issue with incorrect time display
- Resolves issue with using subnets other than 255.255.255.0
- Resolves security issue when using IRC
- Resolves issue with WAN address being pingable when port forwarding is enabled
- Resolves issue with using Kultalinkki banking software
- Resolves issue where web GUI becomes unreachable if remote management is enabled on port 80 or 443
- Resolves issue with slow internal loopback, i.e., accessing a local server through the WAN IP address
- Resolves issue with accessing online game servers
Hopefully one of those is what I want.

A version 5 will not show up as a L with a firmware update. The version 5 is a BAD router.

The V6 is just as bad as a V5.

so which router are you talking about? I just need it for a home network, I can still download at my service speed and it works. It seems not to disconnect anymore, maybe once or twice. I still think it's the modem.
