Cheers, I'm typing this from my tower. All updated on the AVG and Ewido fronts, looking virus free. You have been a HUGE help. I need to install the drivers for my printer and router, then I was hoping you could walk me through securing my network between tower and laptop (maybe tomorrow). Again, thanks a million. Anything else I should be doing now that I've got access to the net again to clear up anything?

Excellent news, we can run through all of that in the next day or so.
If everything is updated your are ready to go.
What router is it?
What printer is it?

You don't need it, thats what I was pointing out to you earlier in the thread. I do my utmost to avoid installing the software that comes with any hardware if I can because usually it is full of bloat.
If some thing requires specific software like a soundcard that has mixing facilities or a video card that has software that can enhance the graphics then ok you need the software, but as in the case of your printer the chances are XP will have the necessary drivers to make it work and you don't need the "phone home" bloat that just tells you that you are running out of ink, if you are savvy enough you will know when you are running low on ink.
If you come across a piece of hardware that XP doesn't have the drivers for then put the CD in your optical drive and then cancel the setup program as it starts, when the found new hardware wizard finds your hardware and starts looking for the drivers to make it work you can point it towards the setup CD and all it will do is load the drivers off the CD, no bloat included.

You do not need to set up the router again - what you do with your computers has no effect on the router.

I'm getting it now, thanks for clarifying.

What would be the first step to set up a secure network between my tower and laptop, that seems to be the next piece of the puzzle.

Your Linksys BEFW11S4, do you know what version it is? there are eight different versions in the product list.

It has a V3 at the end of the mfr # on another part of the modem, so I'm assuming it is version 3...

Now that your tower is all up and running do you want to continue here or start a new thread in networking?
