Slow Network Transfer Speeds
I have two computers connected in the same room through a switch (recently i posted about a hub i was using and such just in case i sound a bit familiar to some). Computer B sends files to Computer A over the network at blazing fast speeds; however, computer A sends files to Computer B at blazing slow speeds (less than 4Mbps). I've tried screwing around with the settings on both computers, but no luck. Both computers are set to full duplex 100Mbps, and both can access the internet and get speeds up to 7.8Mbps download. So, i figure there is a problem on Computer B.
Computer A is using an onboard Marvell Gigabit Network Adapter Computer B is using a Linksys LNE100 Etherfast card. I've searched PCmech and have googled for some solutions, but haven't found much. Any help is greatly appreciated. And if you do happen to find something on these forums from previous posts, i apologize for my lack of searching skills :-/. |

Try switching ports on your switch and checking your cables for proper termination.
What OS(es) are you using? You may also try this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315237 |

check cabling first. switch the cables and see if that solves the problem. if not, change ports on the switch. if that doesn't solve the problem, you may have a bad nic.

thanks for your replies..
Both machines are running Windows XP Pro SP2 I changed the ports used on the switch like you said.. and i swapped the cables only to find the same result: slow going from comp A to B, fast going from Comp B to A. Off to buy a new network card unless i can find one laying around somewhere. I'll post the results of that Any other suggestionS? |

Finally!
Ok, so i think i got it to work .... i say "think" because i'm not sure if it will be a consistant thing :-/. However, after trying a million things and a bunch of different windows settings, i have found that computer A's network "mode" must be set to AutoNegotiate (whereas it was set to 100Mbit Full Duplex). However, computer B can be set to either 100Mbit Full Duplex or autosense without any problem.
This doesn't make any sense to me really, except that maybe there is a conflict between the hardware when Computer A is forced at 100 Full Duplex. Does anyone have a rhyme or reason for why i cannot set Computer A to 100 Full Duplex? I suppose I can live with the setting the way it is, but i've heard bad things about Autonegotiation (note that Autonegotiation and autosense are the same thing, just different terms for each NIC). |

What's the brand and model of your switch? Are all your patch cables properly made CAT5E or better?

my switch is a Netgear FS108.... I'm not 100% sure about the cables. They all say Cat5 but not Cat5E... does that make a difference? they were bought from where ever or taken from extra routers/cable modems that i have laying around...
Oh.. with my setup, i have a cat5 that i put the RJ45 connector on since i was able to get a spool of cat5 to run all around my house. I'm not sure if the data goes all the way back to my router and then back to other computer, or if it goes right through the switch, but perhaps the cat5 that i made was done incorrectly?
