Deleting account

I have been trying to delete an account off my computer using windows XP and it wont let me, I have tired both options of deleting the account the the files, and just deleting the account and saving the files, neither have worked. Now that account doesnt even work correctly and it wont let me get rid of it. Also, after i tried deleting the account a new message starting showing up that this is not genuine microsoft software, i dont know why, i bought the oem XP from newegg and have had no problems untill now. What should i do?

Is the account one that you created or is it the default Admin account?

You'll need to conact newegg about the not genuine message.

There is malware out there that will trigger the WGA notification. Before you do anything else, you need to do comprehensive scans.

Ok, i was able to delete the account and i am no longer getting the message that it is not genuine software, but when i logged on to my account i got a message that the system has recovered from a serious error. I began to do a virus scan and my computer just restarted by itself, this is not that first time that it restarted for no reason.

right after my previous post it restarted for no reason again, but this time when i turned it back on it kept restarting and reloading again and again, the farthest i got was to where i just logged on then it would restart. I finally was able to log on and sent an error report that popped up this link. http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response...c921d6a&SID=11
Also i keep trying to run a virus scan and everytime it says mcAfee has encountered problems and has to close.

I unplugged the ethernet cable from my computer and it worked normally, then as soon as i plugged it back it and it connected to the internet it restarted, i tired it again without the cable in, then plugged it in and it restarted just as it connected. Does anyone know what this could mean, i tried restoring to an earlier date and the same promblem still occurs.

It looks to me like something is trying to connect to the internet all the time, if you can, do a housecall scan as glc suggested or consider the idea of slaving the harddrive into a machine with up to date scanners or high speed internet access and again run a houscall scan on the slave drive.
Whilst slaved, the OS on the drive will not be active therefore hopefully whatever is causing the problem will not be active either and as a result, easier to clean off.

Please do as rjfvillarosa advises and slave the hard drive to another computer. You can run the trendmicro scan from there, I believe.

You can be selective using housecall and just request it to scan the slave.

Ok so i am to remove the hardrive from the computer having problems and connect it to my other computer and run scans on it from there. When i connect it to the other computer will it automatically be set up as the slave drive or is there something i have to do to make it the slave drive? Is there anything else i should know before doing this?

Can you take a look inside your good computer and tell me what colour the plugs are on the IDE (ribbon) cable that connects the harddrive to the motherboard?
Are they all one colour or is there a blue plug on the motherboard end of the cable, a black plug into your harddrive and a grey spare?

Joe-

You should set the jumper on the back of the hard drive to slave before installing it.

If you look at the label on the drive it will usually tell you what position to set the jumper to achieve slave, master, cable select, etc.

Don't forget to return the jumper to master or cable select when you re-install the drive back in the original computer.

The IDE cable from the hardrive to the motherboard of my good computer is black on each end and has a grey one in the middle, the black end connects to a blue port on the motherboard. The connection on my computer having problems is SATA.

This sounds like a candidate for the McAfee command line virus scanner. You can use this in place, as long as you can keep the computer running, normal mode or safe mode.

Download the latest McAfee SuperDAT file. You can do this with a working computer and transfer it with a USB key or CD-R.

http://download.mcafee.com/updates/superdat.asp

Create a folder on C, call it mcafee. Copy this file to it. Open a command prompt.

cd\mcafee
sdatxxxx /e (where xxxx is the 4 digits in the file name, they change almost daily)

Wait 1 minute

scan /adl /clean

Yes it is a separate download entirely to the Mcafee virus scanner.

Have you rebooted your broadband modem - and router, if you have one? Have you tried different network cables?

Ok, i rebooted the modem and router and changed the ethernet cable, it seemed to work, so i started downloading and installing the updates for norton. While it was installing the computer restarted, and when i went to log back in it siad i needed to activiate my version of windows online or over the phone, what would cause that to happen? Im lost on what to do.

Download SeaTools from Seagate and run a full diagnostic on your hard drive. The only reason I say this is the 7200.8 drives have been having reliability issues. You may also want to download and run Memtest86+ just to make sure you don't have ram issues.

Have you considered uninstalling Norton and using AVG or Avast instead?

Will i be able to download them from my good computer and put them on my other computer?

Just download the desktop one to a CD-R and transfer it?

Also i just bought a 2 year subscription to Norton after having problems with McAfee so i would rather use it.
