Finding IP Address Range

My wireless printer requires a static IP address outside of the DHCP address range and I'm trying to determine what that range is.

In the network setup section of the WRT54GL user guide it states: "Because the Router’s default IP address is 192.168.1.1, the Starting IP Address must be 192.168.1.2 or greater, but smaller than 192.168.1.253. The default Starting IP Address is 192.168.1.100."

However, in the Local Network sheet under the Status tab, the Start IP address is 192.168.1.100 (same as above) but the End IP Address is 192.168.1.149. I suppose this range is due to the fact that the max number of users is limited to 50.

So I'm not sure if I should use 192.168.1.254 as a static address for the printer or 192.168.1.150. Is the DHCP range 198.162.1.1-253 or 198.162.1.100-149?

I found a ton of clues here in the forum, but nothing relevant enough to answer my question. Any advice would be appreciated.

Go with what your router says. It says its DHCP scope is 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.149, so any IP address outside of that range will work. 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.70, 192.168.1.250, or anything else.

Thanks, doctor ...

I think I understand now.
Apparently the full range is 198.162.1.1-254. The router uses 198.162.1.1, so that's taken. Because DHCP is set up to assign addresses only between 100 and 149, any other address will be outside its scope and therefore fair game for me to use for my printer.

I'm getting involved with wireless (and networking, for that matter) for the first time and have a little problem wrapping my brain around some of the concepts. This forum is a great help.

Thanks again ...
