are you getting capped?

another region related question.
here in south africa we pay for our gigs and our lines are then capped.
to get uncapped internet costs a fortune for us and only big bussineses can get it.
my question is in your relevnt country how is the internet sold?do you guys also pay per gig or do you pay monthly fees for uncapped internet.

U.S. charges are generally based on connection speed rather than total usage.
Most providers offer several levels for different prices.
Mine offers 256 Kb/s, 5Mb/s and 10Mb/s with no caps.

In Canada, we get invisible caps of 100Gb/month on most ISPs even though, they advertise the service as unlimited downloads.
We pay about $30-40CAD/month[$27-35US] for 3Mbit ADSL, which is around $180-200RAD/month.
it is just a way of coining more cash, if you ask me.

It's not a 3gig line, it's a 3 meg line alfie mentioned.

I have a 6 meg line for 44US/month - When I lived in BA, 6megs would have cost 300US a month.... I know the feeling of expensive internet.

To help cut down on the costs, you can disable images in your browser and install the MVPS HOSTS file (google it) - this will also generate a noticeably faster browsing experience if you don't have to wait for images.

caps are put into place for multiple reasons. the most prevelant are (in no particular order):

- to prevent someone using a residential line for a high voulme commercial purpose
- capacity planning (making sure that the available network can support a specific number of users)
- infrastructure concerns

100GB/month is a ton of traffic for most "normal" folks (surfing, email, small website, non-self hosted blogging and the like) . if you are hosting or have special needs (high volume gaming comes to mind), then, just like a regular off the shelf PC isn't the right fit, standard inet access may not be the choice for you.

okay so ive been checking other service providers out and for me(a south african) open web is about the best...now my question is this,

this is what they offer
2GB + OpenBrowse 96k - SAVE R10 - R186
2GB + OpenBrowse 192k - SAVE R10 - R219
7GB + OpenBrowse 128k - SAVE R14 - R484

ADSL 1GB - R99 (SAVE R22)
ADSL 2GB - R159 (SAVE R12)
ADSL 5GB - R329 (SAVE R50!)
NEW 30GB-LOCAL - ONLY R139

which one is the best with regards to acessing the net and maintaining a website.i mean these prices are dirt cheap but i dont wanna get something and all of a sudden its like "oh sorry man i forgot to mention that your download rate will be like 1kb per hour during peak times"....this is currently happening to a mate of mine who recently got iburst and is paying loads just because its portable.

Here in Slovenia, I pay around $23 for 8Mb/768Kb for my VDSL per month. I have no caps at all, I can download an unlimited amount per month.
I do get 50% off cause I work at the ISP, so it's around $45 for 8megs for normal people, unlimited.
