Hi, My computer is acting really screwy. Here is a hijackthis log. Can anyone tell me if something is wrong and how to fix it?

First off, define "screwy", second, how many anti-virus programs are you running becaues running BitDefender with any other anti-virus program will slow your machine down to a crawl.

Again, it looks like you are running BitDefender and AVG, plus Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security. Running BitDefender with another anti-virus program will slow you machine down. If you are running two FireWalls, thats not good either. I'm not an expert at reading the hijack this log but I would suggest for starters that you only run one anti-virus/firewall program and consider upgrading your machine with XP2.

Again, it looks like you are running BitDefender and AVG, plus Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security. Running BitDefender with another anti-virus program will slow you machine down. If you are running two FireWalls, thats not good either. I'm not an expert at reading the hijack this log but I would suggest for starters that you only run one anti-virus/firewall program and consider upgrading your machine with XP2.

usnavyretired is right. You're choking it to death with security programs and scanners. Norton, AVG, Bitdefender, Ewido, Zonealarm, Webroot
Start getting rid of things and cleaning programs that you don't use. Also, close all the programs that are running in the background that don't need to be.

if someone will listen to me for once. norton is not installed on my computer. ive been trying for months get get rid of its excess files from long ago. I just uninstalled ewido, spy sweeper, bit defender.

can someone please tell me what to do.

Norton is not installed on my system and no norton or symantec files are found. so how do i get rid of the norton process that HJT found?

I do not have multiple spyware programs. above says i removed 3 programs. Currently i only have Zone alarm, AVG, Adaware. thats it.

what should I take off start up.
ask anyone, SP2 is the worst update ever made, EVERYONE i know and talk to does not have it because it screwed up their system and same with mine. Im not going no where near it. Thats my opinion.

Wrong. Service Pack 2 patches multiple holes XP, to the tune oof 300 or more items. If you aren't going to install it, you risk ending up with a system that is running like yours.

The reason SP2 screwed up your friend's systems (and probably yours) is it must be installed on a CLEAN system. Your system is a huge mess, way too much junk installed and running.

If you brought me that system to fix, I'd save your data and do a nuke and pave. Less labor intensive than picking through all that crap.

I dont have money for a new operating system. This compaq got screwed over when i put the other mobo in.(dont ask!!!)

The 04's are the applications starting with Windows, you have far too many applications starting with Windows. Uncheck everything in "startup MSCONFIG" apart from those in the quotation box below.

That log is clean. There is no malware in it. Those O16's are all ActiveX objects and you don't really need ANY of them - if you do need them, they will reinstall when you do need them for something.

Now download Crap Cleaner and do a full cleanup with it, then do a defrag.

Thank you so much GLC!!!!!! Thank you so much for telling me about Crap Cleaner, It removed over a gig of unwanted crap and leftover files from my system.

I know you are dead set against it but Service Pack 2 will make your sytem a hundred times more secure than it is now.
I strongly recommend that you update to Service Pack 2, I have installed it on dozens of machines and never had a problem with it, but, all those machines were clean and free of any viral infection or malware.

I think you have been misinformed, Service Pack 2 is a security update for Windows XP from Microsoft and is free of charge.

Did you use the Issues button in Crap Cleaner and scan/fix repeatedly till no more issues were found? That's a registry cleaner.

You should be able to get Service Pack 2 - and ALL the other required critical updates - from Windows Update. Totally free except for the time to download and install the whole mess.

I know that, and that is why I said it screwed up my computer and I had to reinstall. I tried to install SP@ and my comp crashed. so then i had to reinstall windows because after the install of SP2 it woudnt boot up.

You know you can buy a windows operating system with SP2.

Yes I did, I just figured to scan multile times. Why do you have to scan multiple times though?

Because removing invalid entries unmasks others. If you have never done a registry cleaning, it can take 5 or 6 passes.

I have done a few registry cleanings before. I had to scan issues 7 times to get them all out.
