Installing DSL on 1999 Compaq

I was trying to set up Verizon DSL on my uncle's computer but it doesnt seem to be working. When we called up tech support they said our pc was too old. It was true thought becuase when i checked, it didnt even have and ethernet card. So i popped one in thinking it would be work. I wasnt sure if i had to install software for the card though because i probably lost it. Aside from that, the OS is windows 98, the model is: Compaq7360, and the problem is that when testing connection, there is none found. Tech Support suggested i buy XP and that i purchase something called a Niccard. Whats the most affordable solution for this problem?

Ethernet card and NIC card are the same thing, all you need is drivers for the ethernet card you installed.
Does Windows detect the ethernet card you installed as "found new hardware"?
Is there a yellow triangle next to the ethernet card in device manager?

When you physically installed the ethernet card to the motherboard and restarted your computer did Windows pop up a box that said "found new hardware"?

I don't know if Verizon uses PPPoE, you should check because if it does, chances are you will also have to install dun-14 and raspppoe on your windows 98, without that windows 98 can usually just make a dial up connection, not a DSL one.

Yea I saw the "Found New Hardware" message but i didnt have the disk at the time. Today i bought in the software for it but it wouldnt let me install because it kept asking for the Windows 98 second edition disc which we didnt have. In the end they decided to get XP and have me install it for them. How do i take off 98 from their PC and install XP? (step by step plz )

I don't want to bust that big grin, but XP may not run on that machine.
Put the XP disk in the CD and let it autostart, when the welcome screen comes up use the hardware compatibility wizard to check the machine and post the results back here, it will be in a text format just copy and paste it back here.

When it asks for the Win98 CD, point it to c:\windows\options\cabs. If the Verizon modem is PPPoE on modem or a router, it does not require connection manager software.
