how to get rid of a program using internet in the background

hi guys
i 've ADSL modem 256k broadband connection with a free data limit of 1 GB per month.
The problem is even when i'm not using any program that needs internet i found that there is data transfer going on through the modem / LAN.
The problem i detected when one fine month i found that my data limit had crossed 1GB free data transfer limit. That is when it came to notice.
More over in this time i find the sent data to be much more than the received data.
there is no extra application running in the back ground.
i 've tried scanning through spybot & lavasoft adware but to no use.
pl help.

There could be any number of programs calling home to check for updates.
Adobe, quicktime, antivirus, are a few that come to mind.
If your e-mail is running it will check for new messages every so often too.
You can set most programs so that they don't call home to look for updates.
Just remember to check for updates yourself every so often for your security programs.
