Wireless Router Question
We have a broadband internet connection, a D-Link ADSL Router (DSL-504) and a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G). We have the the phone line connected to the ADSL router and then a blue cable from one of the ethernet ports to the main connection on the Wireless router. We then have a blue cable from the wirless router connecting to the main computer. We then have two computers connecting to the wirless network through D-Link network cards. I don't have any instructions because my Dad brings home just the hardware from work, so was just wondering if this is the correct set up?

Why not take the D-Link out of the equation altogether, and just use the WRT54G? Connect that to your phone line and input the DSL settings into its firmware. Then connect both the wired and wireless computers to it.

A WRT54G is just a router, it has no modem section, so that's not an option here. To do it right, the D-Link needs to be switched to the simple bridge mode (in other words, acting only as a modem with no logon or routing functions) if it's capable of doing that, or it should be replaced with a simple bridge-only DSL modem. You would set the Linksys to PPPoE and store the username and password in the Linksys.
What you have done *should* work, but that's not the right way to do it. You have 2 routers in the equation. As long as the D-Link and the Linksys use different subnets, it should be okay. Here in the US, D-Link routers are on the 192.168.0.x subnet, and Linksys routers are on 192.168.1.x. |

It does work at them moment, but usually the signal strength says 'Very Low'. Will changing the connection to the way you suggested, glc, increase the strength? Or is this just because it's quite a distance between the wireless router and the network cards (Maybe 15m+) as well as going through 3-4 walls?
It's possible that we'll be getting cables under the house as we're planning to have some work done under there. Will this be the fastest solution, other than connecting each computer to a seperate router? |

The only way to boost signal strength is high gain antennas or relocate the equipment.
The BEST solution is run cables and remove the Linksys, connecting all computers directly to the D-Link. |
