Unable to connect to network or less in safe mode
Hi all,
I have a friend's Dell Inspiron 1150 here. Whenever I boot the system normally, I can connect to both my wired and wireless networks but I cannot get internet. If I boot it into safe mode, I can connect to the network and to the internet. I'm running HouseCall right now ... and in fact it just came up with "ADW_WEBSEARCH.B" as an infection. I'll research into it and see if that fixes it, otherwise does anyone have a suggestion?

Normal safe mode does not have networking. There should be an option to boot into 'Safe Mode with Networking'. Try that.

Yes, that is what I did. If I boot Windows normally, I can connect to the network but not to the internet. When I boot into Safe Mode w/ Networking, I can connect to the network and the internet. I need to be able to connect to the internet when booting to Windows normally.
Cleaning the effected files of ADW_WEBSEARCH.B and ADW_WEBSEARCH.E did not fix the problem. |

I ran WinSockFix in normal mode, rebooted, and I still do not have internet connectivity. I get an IP Address, but I cannot ping an external website. I tried resetting all Internet Options to their defaults, and the connection settings are correct.
Any other ideas? |

Are you pulling a valid IP address, gateway, and DNS? Same problem both wireless and wired?

Yes, I'm pulling a valid IP address, gateway, and DNS with both wired and wireless connections. I can release the IP and renew it without any errors. I can ping the laptop from my personal laptop (connected to same router through wireless). However, I am unable to ping my personal laptop from the laptop in question.
When I try to ping my personal laptop's computer name it resolves to the proper IP address but it just times out. Same thing happens when I enter in the IP address. Last edited by PCBrandon; 08-30-2006 at 10:02 AM. |

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers/software for both the wired and wireless adapters.

Already tried for both, forgot to mention that.
Only firewall installed is Windows, and I disabled it to no luck. No AV software installed. |

Re-Install of Windows XP fixed it. She didn't have many documents on there so I went ahead and rebuilt it. I guess a virus and/or spyware got on her system and messed some registry keys up. I installed AVG and Windows Defender from my USB memory stick the first time it booted.
