data transfer rate in wireless routers

i recently bought a linksys router and from what i noticed all the data transfer rates on these are 56 kbps (i could be wrong). however, when i was looking at routers made by buffalo or belkin they have routers with 128 kbps and so on.

1) im kind of new to networking and i was wondering what the difference between the two are? 2) So the buffalo or belkin will transfer more data in a given amount of time than the linksys? 3) Doesn't that make a faster or better router?
4) Does data transfer rate actually lead to perfomance increases?
5) And if not what is the point of it?

thanks in advance.

you might want to post the specific models in question so we can look over the tech specs.
