wireless router vs. wireless access point
Hey there, setting up a home wireless network for the first time. Just splitting a cable connection between three PCs.
I'm going to buy the hardware, but what is the difference between a wireless router and a wireless access point? Which one do I need? thx |

A wireless router will send out a wireless signal from a modem.
A wireless access point will receive a wireless signal from a wireless router / NIC and send it on again to form a larger wireless network with a larger range ![]() Without an existing wireless network a wireless access point would be useless.

A wired network based on a non-wireless router can add wireless connectivity by simply adding a WAP. The WAP is connected to one of the LAN ports on the wired router and sends out a wireless signal allowing additional devices to connect to the same network. |

oops, how embarresing...having looked into it you appear to be correct.I've believed what I said, to be right for quite a long time Everyone makes mistakes...right? In that case I better just clarify...can the WAP be used to extend range on an existing wireless network? |

Yes, if it's capable of being configured as a repeater.

I think I thought a WAP did the job that a repeater is designed to do!

It actually can - depending on the model of the WAP.
