networking help please

hello there folks. i would like some advice on what cable to buy as i want to run two computers of the same broadband account. both the systems have ethernet cards installed in them but i don't know what cable to get. cheers in advance Dave.

You will need CAT5 ethernet patch cables. Should be able to find them at any store selling computers or order from your favorite online computer parts place. You will want to get a router to connect the 2 PCs to share the broadband connection.

It depends on whether your broadband modem has extra ports available. When you look on back, you will have a RJ type connector (RJ-11 or 45, phone or Ethernet) and a cable connector for the main line. Any other ports on it? If so, what type?

Even a local Wal Mart will have what you need. It is called Ethernet, most likely, from what you are saying. The connectors will be called RJ-45 on both ends. The cable ought to cost you a few bucks, depending on the distance between the two. A local computer company, Radio Shack, COMPUSA, etc would have them also, at a higher price than Walmart.

Many here will recommend buying online at Newegg.com, but that seems unnessary in this situation.

there is no ports on the back of the usb broadband modem. as i said i have got an ethernet card in both machines. so do i only need to buy a crossover cable?

If you have a USB modem, it needs to be replaced with a combo modem/router.

Yes, you can use a crossover cable and Internet Connection Sharing, but this is not a good way to do it.
