networked xp and 98

Is there anyway for a win98 to access a win xp pc or is it because of the NTFS that makes it imposable to do so??

As long as the 98 machine is in the same workgroup, Client for MS Networks is installed, and TCP/IP is working with proper IP assignment, access is no problem as long as the XP machine is using simple file sharing or the Guest account is enabled and the 98 machine is set to log on to Microsoft Networking. File systems have nothing to do with network access. If there is a TCP/IP issue, you can install IPX/SPX or NetBEUI on both machines.

It's enabled by default on XP Home - and XP Pro with simple file sharing enabled - when you run the XP networking wizard for file and print sharing. Do that, have it make the floppy disk, then run that floppy on the 98 machine.

Turn off any 3rd party firewalls. The native XP firewall will allow sharing if it's in the exception list.

It is off I use the router and not the xp firewall. I did notice something last night messing around with it is it can't see it self on the network like my two xp computers do so I think it is something to do with the settings on win 98

The 98 box could have a bad NIC or bad NIC driver. Is it set to log on to Microsoft Networking? Windows Logon won't cut it. Is TCP/IP working?

Thats OK glc I think maybe it might be a bad install of win98se or bad NIC because my wifes PC is the same OS but a lil faster and more memory and that computer can see both XP pro PC's and the one that i am having problems with, the pc that can't see any other computer is only 233mhz with 64 mb of ram and an extra hard drive at 4 GB works well as a file server I can upload pix or what ever I want and any of the other pc'c in my network can download it so as old as this computer is I really can't ask for more then what it does now and if I really wanted to reinstall 98 I think I would have problems finding drivers and stuff

Thanks for all your help anyways glc
