router problem

Hi there
First the usual info...I am running windows xp on 2 pcs connected to the internet via an ethernet hub to a bt voyager 1200 modem/router. (all wired with ethernet).
My problem seems to be the configuration of my router.
I set the router up as per talktalk instructions but i get an error message saying cannot contact the configuration server. Also, the router seems to change my settings, such as its adds an extra digit to my password and keeps putting the dns server back to automatic detection.
All my settings in the router are on automatic at the moment.
I can connect to the internet although this drops often, and i cannot seem to access some secure sites that require log on information. Also, sometimes i can connect to msn messenger live and sometimes i cant.
I have tried using talktalks recommended dns server addresses etc but it seems to make no difference.
This is all very frustrating.
Is my router just not up to the job? or can any help with its configuration?
In case you hadnt guessed, i'm in the uk.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Make sure you have any and all firewalls switched off in XP. What browser are you using? You need to check the page content certificate acceptions list and make sure that it's only allowing legitmate signed page certificates to pages to be viewed.

I don't think that's a router, it's just a modem, or in this case, simply a digital bridge, and it looks like it has a USB socket as well an ethernet socket. Judging by the symptoms, it sounds like you're using the USB socket which is a no no. You'll be better off with an actual router as the Voyager will only issue one internal IP (I think) because it only allows one device to be plugged into it.

Also, if you use a router, you can drop the hub.

That is a true router - it's the same thing as the 2Wire units SBC/AT&T use here. It only has one Ethernet port, but you can connect a hub or a switch to it just like you have done.

The modem/router that you put the link up for is the 1 i own. I have the modem/router connected to the hub by an ethernet cable. I'm not using the usb at all.
I turned off windows firewall but it made no difference.
I am using IE6 as my browser
Any other suggestions please?

This does not address the issue.

Have you discussed these issues with your ISP? That router has a pretty extensive technician's interface to help troubleshoot problems.

The suggestion to bypass the hub is VERY valid - you really should be using a switch, not a simple hub.

The router *IS* capable of running one PC with Ethernet and one with USB simultaneously if you want to try that.
