Domain Problem

I’m trying to join LapTop HP DV6000 (Win XP Pro) under Domain, but I’m having problems. I have done this before , so I’m kind of familiar but with this one I cant.
I’m not even able to see under ‘user accounts’ on which domain they are assigned ( I have that friendlier look for User Management and not under Domain control look)
Also when I’m restarting the system or making a log-off, on "Welcome to Windows “ window I can see only the lines for Username and Password, and Under "Options > >" there is no additional line : "Log on to: ", ( where I can select domain)
Any thoughts

Yes, I'm doing that way, but still can't join domain

when you try to add it to the domain are you getting any error messages? is it prompting you for a domain admin username and password? does it say it succussfully added the pc to the domain and prompting for a restart?

I’m entering user name and password with administrative rights on the domain, and after that I’m prompt
‘Windows cannot find an account for your computer on the CHIDWTN… domain

Computer Name :
Computer Domain

After entering comp name and same Domain , I’m prompt’ A domain controller for the domain CHIDWTN… could not be contacted…
I think something is wrong with DNS. I'm not able to ping the server by his name, but I'm able to ping by it's IP.
I'm using DNS given from my ISP. (Same settings like all others Win XP machines under the same Domain)

you need to use dns for your local network not the isp dns server.

either set it to obtain ip address automatically or enter in the correct dns server information for the laptop

How to find what is my local network isp dns server?

its the ip address of what ever server is running DNS

my domain controller runs my dhcp and dns so its the ip address of my domain controller.

I’m not sure which server is running our DNS. I tried with IP of the server, but again the same. Our DHCP Server is in the Sonic Wall (Firewall)
Any idea how to find out IP of our DNS?

how many servers do you have on this local network? how many DC do you have? if you have only one domain controller, then it has to be that server if you are running active directory. go to administrative tools and look for dns and verify that it is installed and running.

go to a machine that is working, and do an ipconfig /all to find the ip address of the dns server, then use that ip address. for example, my DC runs dns so from my laptop when i run ipconfig /all i get this:

in my case i would use 192.168.30.2 or since im plugged into the network or on a wireless connection on the same network as my Dns server i can just set it to obtain an ip address automatically since my DC is running both DHCP and DNS

We have only one server (Windows NT). How to check about Domain controller and active directory?
Under administrative at the server between the others I can only find ‘User Manager for Domains’(Where I ‘m adding new users ,passwords) and ‘WINI Manager’, no DNS Server or manager or Domain Controller

Network cable. I find out DNS using ipconfig, but still I cant assign under Domain

I figured it out. I was NORTON FIREWALL. I just turn it off and everything was perfect.

Windows NT server doesn't have Active Directory and generally cares nothing about DNS. WINS and NetBios are what it uses. See if you can ping the domain by ping domainname and ping servername.

This article shows you how to enable NetBIOS over TCP which should resolve your problem.

i would recommend removing the norton firewall on the xp pro laptp and use the windows firewall which will work just fine especially because you already have a hardware sonic firewall in place, that norton one will just continue to give you headaches.........
